Professor Oks received his Ph.D. in 1975 from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and his Doctor of Sciences in 1985 from the Institute of General Physics, Academy of Sciences, Moscow. The latter degree "is awarded only to outstanding Ph.D. scientists who founded a new research field of great interest". Prior to coming to the Auburn University, Professor Oks held a variety of senior research positions in the Soviet Union and later in Germany.
Professor Oks has authored or co-authored over 150 publications in the areas of PLASMA SPECTROSCOPY, LASER PHYSICS, and NONLINEAR DYNAMICS, and has given numerous invited lectures at international conferences. He has authored 2 monographs, the latest one being entitled "Plasma Spectroscopy: The Influence of Microwave and Laser Fields". In this book, which is the only one monograph in the literature on the subject, he presented a variety of new NONLINEAR OPTICAL PHENOMENA in different types of plasmas. He is the member of the International Committee of the bi-annual conference "Spectral Line Shapes" and the Associate Editor of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. His achievements have been also recognized by the Dean's Research Award (1996) and by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1988).
